As we approach the end of the year, we wanted to reach out and share a few important updates from all of us at PIOC.

In the recent local elections held on 28th May 2023 in Orihuela Costa, the newly formed political party PIOC (Partido por la Independencia de la Orihuela Costa) made a significant impact despite its relatively short existence since September 2022.

Orihuela had hired three more advisers raising the list to 23 positions with trust just over three months before the municipal elections, jobs for friends or family, The appointments were made by decree by our unelected Mayor's Office.

Sewage on the coast is a real disaster and is getting worse year after year. Not so long ago at the height of the tourist season, there was a major embarrassment for the Orihuela Costa when three of our major beaches were because of sewage contamination.

Orihuela Costa is developing in an ad hoc fashion with no real vision and no evidence of town planning. This is hardly surprising as the planning authority and local politicians all based 34 kilometres away have no real interest in the area other than as a money-making machine that contributes disproportionately to the coffers of Orihuela City.

The residents of Orihuela Costa suffer from an appalling lack of services compared to all other local towns. This cannot be blamed on population size as Orihuela Costa has a population far greater than many of the villages that have full control of their own administrative affairs.

A few years ago, during a time of austerity, the city of Orihuela spent well over €130,000 on events for the young people living in the city over several months.

Are you aware there is a water shortage in Spain? Has anyone bothered to tell? You have to be careful, to save water! No! Why not? Spain has a serious water shortage, this includes Orihuela Costa and surrounding areas.

With the elections edging closer National Parties have their eyes firmly focused on their most valuable asset and that is Orihuela Costa.

PIOC has recently requested the ‘Ministry of Labour and Social Economy’ to open an Office of the Public State Employment Service (SEPE) in Orihuela Costa.

PIOC was privileged to support the parents and teachers of the schools of Orihuela Costa on Friday the 25th of November.

In the last year, PIOC had received reports from residents of their bins mysteriously disappearing.

There was an article from a few years ago that is still relevant today regarding the state of our council and mayors.

Every vote now is critical for the future of Orihuela Costa; more votes equal more councillors which equals more that can be done to help Orihuela Costa regain its former glory.

Among PIOC’s short-term goals are to run for councillors in the next municipal elections, which would allow us to tip the balance of municipal power, to build a cultural centre with a library and auditorium, and to improve the rubbish collection, transportation, and street asphalting services.

Currently, in the Orihuela Costa town hall, there is a queuing line right next to the main entrance and directly opposite the reception desk for registering to vote in the upcoming election in 2023.

What PIOC believes is that PP, Ciudadanos, or PSOE are greatly concerned that if Orihuela Costa had the same level of services that the rest of Orihuela enjoys, the number of registered people here would be greater than in the rest of the municipality combined.

More rubbish, more weeds, more bad roads, less maintenance, fewer improvements and less funding. Orihuela, you can be proud of your accolade.
