Can UK nationals vote in local elections?

Yes, because there is an agreement between Spain and the united kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which recognizes the right of British citizens residing in Spain to vote and to stand as a candidate.

Because of Brexit British citizens need to re-register at every election.

To be able to exercise your right to vote in municipal elections, Spain has four requirements for British citizens residents residing in Spain.

You must:-

  1. Be a legal resident of Spain.

  2. Have legally and uninterruptedly resided in Spain for at least 3 years before your request to enrol on the electoral census.

  3. Be legally registered with the relevant municipality at your home address.

  4. Be enrolled on the electoral census of foreign nationals resident in Spain.

  • The deadline you can enrol is from 1st December 2022 to 15th January 2023. only 6 weeks!

  • Everyone who meets the requirements will receive a letter from the electoral office by the end of November.

  • Check the details are correct and follow the instruction in the letter. if your details are correct, you return the letter in the prepaid envelope provided or go online to the address in the letter.

  • Make sure you have signed and dated the letter.

  • If any details are not correct, go to the town hall asap who will have the instructions to help you.

  • Note, if you do not receive your letter by 7th December you need to go to the town hall to ask them to check if you are on the voting register, if not, declare you want to vote to the staff.

  • They will have the instructions to help you, with what to do next.

  • Remember to take with you your passport, your Padron and your TIE number.

  • No appointment is necessary at the Orihuela costa town hall, there will be additional staff and opening hours provided by the Padron office staff between 1st December 2022 and 15th January 2023.

Additional hours Monday and Wednesday 15.30 - 18.30. If you have changed your address after 31st august check your old address.
