Unemployment, embracing a new era of work

PIOC has recently requested the ‘Ministry of Labour and Social Economy’ to open an Office of the Public State Employment Service (SEPE - Servicio Público de Empleo Estatal) in Orihuela Costa. But what is SEPE? This is the office for employment. The below letter is the response that we recently received on January 13th, 2023.

Why does PIOC believe that this service is a requirement for Orihuela Costa? We believe that this is an essential service for any Spanish town and city, which is inhabited by tens of thousands of tax-paying residents.

Remember that although we have more than 25,000 registered residents, the real number of residents exceeds 50,000 if we look at water and electricity consumption and in the summer months this figure far exceeds 100,000 residents.

Although, it is not acceptable that unemployed people should go to another city to carry out procedures that the State must facilitate in their locality. We must take into account that all SEPE Offices have a space used by the Autonomous Employment Services in their facilities.

In this case, the office ‘SERVEF’(Servicio Valenciano de Empleo y Formación), an Institution from Generalitat Valenciana that assists unemployed residents to find work and partake in training courses, could most likely be able to serve the unemployed much better in Orihuela Costa. This could provide job training courses without the need for the unemployed to bear any expense of fuel or public transportation. We believe that this is a matter of Social Justice. PIOC trusts that Orihuela Costa can receive a definitive answer as soon as possible and that this will be a positive outcome.
